All living things have a life force. In the normal course of living we all have experiences that deplete our energy. It can be something as simple as having an argument with your kids or boss, or something more serious like losing your job or getting divorced. Events like these are the major causes of stress which everyone feels at some point in their life. Stress can literally drain your life force until you are weakened enough that you succumb to illness. When this happens many people will start taking medications which add further stress to the body, and the cycle continues.
